What Virgil van Dijk told Adrian before heroic penalty shootout
Virgil van Dijk told BT Sport that he told Adrian before the penalty shootout against Chelsea that he could be the hero.
“I’m very glad and very happy that Adrian saved the last one,” van Dijk told BT Sport.
“He should enjoy himself. I told him before the penalties ‘you can be the hero tonight, so do it’. He did it, and I’m really happy for him and for the club as well.”
Adrian gave away a penalty that allowed Chelsea to equalise and while footage from the game shows that Tammy Abraham dived, the Spaniard exonerated himself with his save on the Chelsea striker from the final penalty in the shootout.
Liverpool will be without Alisson Becker for at least a few weeks and Adrian’s heroics in Istanbul show that the Spaniard will be a decent stand-in for his Brazilian colleague.
Southampton will be the Reds’ next test as they travel to the South Coast to face Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side in the second Premier League game of the season.
