Jurgen Klopp reveals what he told Philippe Coutinho in person

Philippe Coutinho

Jurgen Klopp told German news outlet Bild that he told Philippe Coutinho to join Bayern Munich this summer because Liverpool couldn’t afford him.

Klopp said: “Amazing player, we really didn’t want to let him go. Barca forced us financially.

“World-class player, really good transfer for Bayern and the Bundesliga. I thought it’s a good fit for both when I first heard about it. It may sound strange, but we didn’t have enough money to get him. We’d already spent all the money we got for him. I have already told him in person that he and Bayern will be a good fit.”

Liverpool were abnormally quiet in the transfer window this summer but their form so far this season has vindicated Jurgen Klopp’s decision to keep faith with the players he already has at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have all looked sharp while the defensive strength which has made Liverpool so successful recently looks to be returning in force with every passing game.

The Reds looked a bit vulnerable in the first few games against Norwich, Chelsea and Southampton but wins over Arsenal and Burnley saw a van Dijk-led backline flex its muscle once again.

Premier League action will return once again this weekend after the international break and Klopp’s players will look to make it five in a row this season by beating Newcastle at Anfield on Saturday.
