Liverpool’s Joël Matip Strolls to PFA Player of the Month Award

Liverpool’s player of the season so far was rightly named September player of the month.
This past weekend was a very good one for Liverpool fans, as they watched their side beat Leicester City and former manager Brednan Rodgers with a stoppage time penalty goal and then saw their main rivals dropping points.
And what better way to cap it off than with word that Joël Matip had been named the PFA’s Player of the Month for September—a fitting honour for the veteran centre half who has been Liverpool’s best player of the season so far.
It wasn’t close, either, with Matip netting 41% of the overall vote while runner-up Riyad Mahrez of Manchesrer City earned just 17% and teammate Kevin De Bruyne and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got 14% of it.
While it’s always a little surprising to see defenders honoured over more flashy attacking players, with Liverpool’s perfect start through eight Premier League games this season and the league’s best defensive record, it’s well deserved.
Matip, who missed the last league match against Leicester due to a minor knock, will be expected to finish his recovery over the international break and be ready to go when the Reds play Manchester United on October 20th.
