Rumor Mongering: Liverpool Open Negotiations For Timo Werner

Werner is also linked with a move to Manchester United, because of course he is.

For the past several seasons German striker Timo Werner has been top transfer rumor fodder, not just for Liverpool, but all across Europe. As the player’s contract wound down into its final season, it really seemed as if a move was imminent, either for a bargain-basement fee in winter, or a free transfer in the summer of 2020.

And then he signed an extension until the summer of 2023, and all went quiet. At least, it was quiet for a couple of months, but some murmurings have recently reemerged. To the shock of no one, Liverpool and Manchester United are leading the conversation, with the Merseysiders reportedly opening negotiations for the 23-year-old, according to “Transfer Expert” Ian McGarry on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast.

“Timo Werner is a target for Manchester United and Liverpool in the January window but it may be the summer before he actually makes the move,” McGarry said.

“Raphael [Honigstein] told us that it was widely believed the player has a recision clause in his contract but no-one as of yet knows what it is.

“What we can tell you on the transfer window today is that Liverpool have begun the process of formal negotiations with RB Leipzig for the player’s transfer.

“We understand that contact has been made and indeed is ongoing between Liverpool and the German Bundesliga side and that Werner himself is keen for a move to Anfield.

”Of course, he would link up with countryman Jurgen Klopp.”

On the one hand, this seems to be a more substantive claim than most transfer rumor dross.

On the other, the details are still lacking and it seems to be a case of both “once a Liverpool target, always a Liverpool target,” and “name two big clubs (margin of error, +/- one club), it’s good for them clicks, yo.”

But can you imagine Liverpool next year if Werner joins? Our front three would be Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino. And James Milner would be the first substitute.
