Liverpool 1, Everton 0 - Match Recap: Merseyside Is Red (The Cards Are Only Yellow)

A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s nervy victory over Everton in Premier League action.
Liverpool FC 1 - 0 Everton FC
Reds: Jota 57’
Blues: N/A
Pre-Match
Two major bits of pre-match news: Alisson is out, presumably injured again (or still) and Curtis Jones has been deployed out at right back. Diaz also gets the nod over Gakpo. Anyway, it’s the 246th Merseyside Derby, into these, Reds!
First Half
It’s a quick start for the Reds, as they mostly keep the visitors pinned back deep in their own defensive third.
Tarkowski gets away with a horror challenge in the 11th minute. It looked like a red in real time and VAR somehow, for Paul Tierney reasons, doesn’t correct a clear and obvious error. Absolute horror challenge. Fuck a red card, Tarkowski should be arrested for assault.
You can’t fault Liverpool’s energy so far this half, but their execution leaves a lot to be desired. They’ve simply not managed to find the final ball to create a clear cut opportunity.
Meanwhile, Everton are dangerous on the break. They’ve had one goal chalked off for offsides, and hit the post on another 1 v 1.
Liverpool were largely the better side in the half but have nothing to show for it. They were somehow both too rushed and not quick enough moving the ball in the attacking third. Hopefully they can find some composure in the second half (and maybe the ref can also grow a spine).
Second Half
Liverpool have really started ratcheting up the pressure in the early stages of the second half and it feels for the first time like a goal is coming.
AND JOTA BREAKS THE DEADLOCK! Diaz picks up a loose ball and plays in Jota, who still had quite a few defenders to dribble through, which he did with aplomb, before coolly slotting with his right foot.
A few minutes later Jota gets a yellow for dissent after the refs have been complete dogshit all night. Naturally.
Darwin comes on for Jota with about fifteen minutes to play. Give ‘em hell, Darwin. About ten minutes later Gakpo comes on for Diaz.
Darwin somehow gets a yellow for getting absolutely walloped by Pickford in the area. WILD decision.
It’s been a much better second half from The Reds, and if they hold on, they will be deserved winners on the night. But of course, a nervy last few minutes, regardless of the Endo victory cigar.
Final Thoughts
Liverpool held on in the end, and go 12 points clear again. Liverpool need just 13 more points in their last 8 matches to be crowned champions.
