Klopp Talk: “Winning the League Is the Best Problem You Can Have”

Jürgen Klopp isn’t interested in any negativity as Liverpool look to begin the defence of their Premier League crown.

Liverpool have never been more successful in the Premier League era than they have been over the past two seasons, with Jürgen Klopp’s side earning 196 league points and winning a league title along with a Champions League trophy, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Yet if you listened to some people, including some Liverpool fans, you might think there had never been a worse time to be a Liverpool fan as talk turns from having won to having to defend what they’ve won and to how difficult it will be to win it all over again this season.

“Winning the league last year is the best problem you can have,” Klopp insisted. “If it’s a problem I don’t know even, but everybody gives me the feeling that it should be because everybody else wants to be champion but that’s not news, so we’ll just give it a try again.

“We know we face some incredibly strong teams and it’s about if we can put intense performances on the pitch again and again. That’s it pretty much, and it’s the job we have to do. The Premier League is the strongest league in the world but we will be ready.”

Ready with a squad that established itself as a dominant side in England and Europe the past two seasons. A side that is by any measure one of the top three in Europe. Ready with a side that Klopp says is feeling good despite the compressed offseason and preseason.

Others may have done more than Liverpool this offseason, but those others are the ones doing the chasing. They’re the ones playing catch-up with a side that is amongst the greatest Liverpool teams ever assembled, with a core group still in their prime years.

“We are now pretty much in our normal rhythm,” Klopp said. “That will change in the next few weeks because we play it feels more often than not, but it’s okay because everybody has to do it, all the teams in Europe and all the teams with international players.”
