Liverpool Internationals: Netherlands and Wales Win, Scotland Draws

And our Greek international got COVID. So, a mixed bag in the UEFA Nations League, really.

Even during pre-COVID times, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called the UEFA Nations League “the most senseless competition in the world.” Almost as if to personally spite Kloppo, UEFA decided to push ahead with the especially senseless competition, playing the matches in front of empty stadiums and in the middle of an already short preseason.

UEFA gonna UEFA. The games must be played, and here we are, hoping our players don’t get injured and/or infected with COVID-19, and already failing on the latter front after new signing Kostas Tsimikas tested positive.

Regardless, we have results to discuss! On Thursday night Neco Williams earned his first cap for Wales with a 30-minute substitute appearance in a 1-0 win over Finland, which put them top of Group 4 of Nations League B.

Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum both played the full 90 minutes for the Netherlands against Poland, trotting out 1-0 winners and taking the early lead in Group 1 in Nations League A. It’s a good result, though not quite as impressive without Robert Lewandowski in the Poland side.

Finally, Andrew Robertson captained the Scotland side, playing all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Israel. It’s a disappointing home draw, especially after taking the lead just before halftime.

The Nations League matches continue today, and Liverpool players Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold will likely be involved in some capacity as England travel to Iceland.
