Liverpool Reject Talk of Barcelona Contact for Gini Winaldum
The English club have told connected journalists they have had no discussions with the La Liga side.
Last night, reports out of Spain claimed negotiations to take Gini Wijnaldum to Barcelona were at an advanced stage with the Catalan club having agreed a three-year deal with the player in principle and now entering into talks with Liverpool for him.
Today, Liverpool have responded via club-connected journalists, with Goal’s Neil Jones and The Athletic’s James Pearce both stating that nobody at Anfield has heard from Barcelona yet concerning their supposed interest in the 29-year-old midfielder.
Given Wijnaldum’s contract situation—he’s down to the final year of his with and even if he remains for this season isn’t expected to be at the club beyond it—some may read a lot into Pearce’s use of “yet,” but at the very least a deal isn’t on the verge of done.
In a lot of ways, it’s a mirror image of the Thiago Alcantara rumours, where the German press continue to insist personal terms are agreed in principle and a deal will be done soon but the days pass and Liverpool never actually contact Bayern Munich.
What it all really means—whether either of these deals actually will get done or whether it’s all simply spin and disinformation and the transfer window is fated to shut with Gini still at Liverpool and Thiago still at Bayern—only time will tell.
