Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Want to Keep Marko Grujic

The player’s agent believes Grujic will be given at least until January to show if he has a future at Anfield.

A month ago, the story was that Liverpool wouldn’t be looking to loan players like Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson, that instead the Reds would be looking to find some of their older fringe players a permanent home this summer—in part perhaps to help finance incomings.

Now, though, it appears as though the situation could be changing. That’s because Gujic’s agent told Germany’s Kicker over that Liverpool’s current plan is to hold on to the midfielder until at least January to give him a chance to perhaps show he has a future at Anfield.

The story is being cast as something of a response to ongoing Hertha Berlin interest in the player—Hertha had Grujic on loan these past two seasons and made no secret of the fact they wanted him back, but their proposed deal of around €15M is said to have been denied.

On the Liverpool end, earlier talk of the club looking to sell Grujic had come with a pricetag in the £25-30M range, or double what Hertha are meant to have offered. And if all of these parts, these different rumours from different times, are true, it may suggest a simple reality.

Namely that there are no buyers this summer for Grujic at the price Liverpool want and with a busy fixture list, if they can’t sell the 24-year-old, they might as well give him a few more months to impress—though pre-season suggests he’ll be well down the pecking order.
