The midfielder talks about Barcelona and his future at Liverpool

There’s been much ado made about Gini Wijnaldum’s future at Liverpool, especially over the summer with rumours that Ronald Koeman was very keen on bringing Wijnaldum over to Barcelona with him. Suffice to say, nothing actually happened and Liverpool continue to have the best smile in football in midfield, but it sounds like that may come down to a lack of serious interest from Barcelona rather than any decisions being made by Wijnaldum himself.

“I don’t think [the Barcelona interest] was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened,” Wijnaldum said in a recent interview. “There was nothing concrete. I didn’t have to think about it.”

“I will stay on [at Liverpool] it looks like now. My contract will run for another 10 months. It could still change, of course you never know that in football. So we’ll see.”

Not exactly the most reassuring statement from the midfielder, but in the short term at least, there seems to be an understanding between all involved parties.

“It’s all good with Gini,” Klopp said about the midfielder’s position at the club. “Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved. I can’t speak about a few years, but it’s all good for the moment.”

“You know the situation — between me, Gini, and the club, everything is fine. Since Gini is here I have had 500 or 600 talks with him.”

Well, there you go. How can anyone say no to staying out the end of their contract after 500 or 600 talks with Klopp?
