The Serbian will spend the remainder of the season in Portugal.

It had been widely believed that Marko Grujic would be stuck languishing unused on Merseyside, He spent the last two seasons with Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga. However, he had returned to Melwood for preseason and even featured in Liverpool’s League Cup loss against Arsenal last week.

Transfer deadline day in England came and went without finding the 24-year-old Serbian a new home. Negotiations fell through with a few Bundesliga clubs who couldn’t afford Liverpool’s asking price for a permanent deal.

But then on Tuesday evening, the confirmation came via the official site that Grujic will spend the rest of the season at FC Porto. Portugal is one of a few European countries where the transfer window remains open for longer, and so Liverpool made the outgoing deal. The interest in Grujic was said to happen very suddenly, and the Reds softened their stance on Grujic not going out on loan again when they appeared to run out of good options.

The Portuguese champions will also give Grujic an opportunity to compete in the Champions League this season as well.

Grujic is a good player who has no hope of making it into Liverpool’s first team due to the incredible strength of Klopp’s current midfield. If he can continue proving himself on the continent, then Liverpool could potentially make a good sum of money off of his permanent transfer and get him somewhere more suited to his talents.
