The midfielder has been a constant presence in recent weeks, and he’s loving it.

Liverpool have struggled through an injury crisis in recent weeks with Jürgen Klopp left with ever thinning options in midfield and defence. Through it all, though, there has been one constant presence in the side. Gini Wijnaldum.

The veteran Dutch midfielder, out of contract at the end of the season, has taken the opportunity of the past few weeks to remind everyone of just how important he is to this side. Last night, he put an exclamation point on it.

“I’m loving playing games,” the 30-year-old said after scoring the second goal of the night, the one that made Liverpool’s eventual 4-0 victory over Wolves feel inevitable. “I’m loving playing games, and I’m lucky and blessed that I’m fit.

“I’m just enjoying the moment. It can look like, ‘I always play a lot of games, it’s hard and difficult,’ but I always try to look at the bright side of playing a lot of games because we are all footballers to play games and I just enjoy it.”

As to his contract situation, Wijnaldum would only smile and decline to comment when asked what his plans are beyond the current season. In this current season, though, it’s been clear just how important he is to this side.

That importance won’t lessen in the coming weeks, as even with a few injured players starting to return, Liverpool face two games a week for the foreseeable future—including a battle with title rivals Tottenham on December 16th.
