Liverpool FC and Vicky Jepson Part Ways

With Jepson’s departure, the club continue to show their disregard for the women’s team.

Liverpool FC continue their fine tradition of not caring about the women’s team today with the announcement that coach Vicky Jepson will be leaving ‘by mutual consent’. Jepson has been with the club for 12 years and has focused heavily on developing the women’s game at the club. It’s just a pity the club didn’t care enough to put actual resources behind her efforts.

“It’s with a heavy heart that my time has come to an end with Liverpool Football Club; the place I love and have been lucky enough to call home for over a decade,” Jepson said. “Over the years I have been fortunate to work across the entire pathway at this club. During this time, I’ve seen so many youth players go on to wear the first-team red shirt, which fills me with immense pride. It’s been a privilege to have contributed to their careers.

“To the many senior players, both past and present, that I’ve worked with, I thank you. Thank you for empowering me with your relentless efforts, professional attitudes and sacrifices that you make daily as a professional footballer. I will be forever grateful for our time together and will be supporting you all from afar this season.”

You can read the entire statement (as well as the club’s statement, if you’re interested in getting even angrier) here.

It goes without saying that this sucks. Liverpool have consistently shown a lack of regard for the women’s side, except as a PR exercise, and the fact that staff and players keep leaving (usually for our rivals) is telling. There is a very clear blueprint for how Liverpool can support the women’s side (for starters, offering the same training facility as they did Marine AFC). The returns on that support are also very clear. Whether Liverpool FC bother to actually do something is another story.
