Liverpool continue their pre-season schedule following Tuesday’s mini-games, both of which ended 1-1. Manager Jürgen Klopp got his start in management at Mainz, where he spent 18 years as player and then manager.

Today’s reunion with the side might all the more special given that Mainz’s manager, Bo Svensson, was a player under Klopp in 2007/08. Svensson took charge of Mainz in January and oversaw a strong finish to the season that avoided any relegation fears.

For his part, Klopp has emphasized that he personally knows very few people still at Mainz, and his fondness is more directed at the club itself:

“This club [Mainz] is more, for me, then meeting old friends or players or whatever.

“I spent 18 years there so I’m just interested that they are doing well because a lot of people I know care a lot about this club. It’s important to them, so it’s important to me.”

Liverpool’s squad was bolstered by Andy Robertson’s arrival at pre-season training this week, but is unlikely to feature — he’s doing his lactate testing exercise today!
