The versatile vice-captain put in a stellar shift yesterday against Crystal Palace.

James Milner was informed about filling in at the right-back position just a couple of hours before Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace. Trent Alexander-Arnold was taken ill, and Milner rose to the occasion as he has always done. Not only that, he also put in a man-of-the-match performance with his running and endless stamina. And it’s a job he is always ready to do.

“..that’s what we’re prepared for and the training is done so anyone is ready at any time. That’s my job when I’m needed”, Milner said, speaking to liverpoolfc.com.

He acknowledged that Palace put up a fight, making the game tougher than it looked for Liverpool.

“It was a performance where changes had been made obviously and a performance [following] a big midweek game. So, we know we can play better but they’re the ones you have to grind out, and we managed to do it”, he said.

“It doesn’t look like we grind it out really when it’s 3-0, you see some of the goals we scored, which were fantastic, but they had chances which we’d like to stop obviously, Ali had a bit of work to do.”

With title race shouts springing up after yesterday, Milner believes it’s important for Liverpool to keep the consistency going.

“I think the thing we need to look at as a team is the momentum factor and the results and the clean sheets. The clean sheets are so important – it’s such a great habit to get into. Obviously there’s games where you’re not playing so well and you get to nick one goal if you’re keeping that clean sheet – it’s massive and obviously the difference between two points. We need to keep doing that.”
