Pep Lijnders with Glowing View of Harvey Elliott’s Mentality
The youngster looked to make a real impact on the first team this season, making his positive response to his set-back all the more impressive.
After sustaining a dislocated fractured ankle against Leeds United at Elland Road, Harvey Elliot has been concentrating on his recovery following his successful surgery on September 12th.
While the news that Elliott is likely to feature again this season came as a welcome surprise to us all — and is no small thing given the normal conservative estimates we’re used to about returns after injury — no time scale exists for the youngster’s return.
Despite the uphill battle towards recovery and return, Pep Lijnders spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his view of Elliott’s response to the challenge.
Harvey is Harvey, a young boy and he deals with it outstandingly, I have to say. If you see our squad of players, we have so many players who had not similar injuries, but similar situations where they had a long-term injury.
You see that our group is a proper family, you see how they reacted when it happened - Naby [Keïta] was with tears in his eyes next to the pitch, Curtis [Jones] was emotional.
You see how much it means to all of us, not just from a football point of view, but from a young player point of view [who was] in such a good moment and we lost one of our better midfielders.
He deals with it really well and we have a really strong structure in place with our medical department, with all the guys around, we try to support him as much as we can in these early stages.
With a long-term injury, each day is a victory - the small things, step by step, and he’s focusing on this.
While there is a long way to go, Elliott’s attitude — and the maturity it suggests — as well as the support Lijnders highlights as a major component of this team tells us that he’s already well on his way back.
