Adam Lallana Explains Brighton’s Second Half Tactical Shift
The former Liverpool man explained the changes that led to Brighton controlling the midfield and securing a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Liverpool’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday was a prime example of what can happen when you allow a well-managed team to dictate the play. Although there is no denying Liverpool are the better side on paper, Graham Potter’s tactical shift in the second half allowed Brighton to earn a point against the second-placed Reds.
After the match, Adam Lallana gave his thoughts on the match and explained the tactical changes Brighton instituted in the second half that allowed them to take control and ultimately leave Anfield with a point.
“Fantastic game and I’m sure for the neutral it was a great watch,” Lallana told the Brighton and Hove Independent. “To go 2-0 down you think it is going to be one of those days.
“There was a momentum shift when VAR came to the rescue when we faffed around with it. We rode our luck a little but we had chances just before we hit the post as well.
“There was belief and we started playing and got the goal. At halftime, we said to believe and second half was outstanding. Brave, getting on the ball, controlling the game. On another day we could have won.”
As for how the Seagulls managed to take control of the match in the second half, it came down to ball control and neutralizing Jordan Henderson in the midfield according to Lallana.
“We played the ball round the back and frustrated them. We changed tactically and I went man to man on Hendo because he was controlling too much first half.”
The result wasn’t the only reason Lallana left Anfield with a smile on his face on Saturday. The former Red left LFC during the period where fans were not allowed in the stands because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he didn’t get the emotional sendoff from the Kopites that he deserved.
On Saturday, this was remedied to some extent when the midfielder received a very warm reception and an ovation upon his 77th-minute substitution.
“[I was] very humbled by it,” said Lallana. “I had an outstanding time here and unfortunate to leave without saying goodbye properly. So [it was] nice to come back to a welcome like that.”
He also took to Instagram to share a message of thanks for the warm welcome to his “second home.”
