Kostas Tsimikas on Living His “Biggest Dreams” at Liverpool
The Greek left back is happy to be fit and getting chances to show what he can do for the Reds this season.
Kostas Tsimikas arrived at Liverpool as the Greek player of the year, and when he’s had chances he’s shown he’s is one of the top left backs in European football. Being behind Andy Robertson in the pecking order, though, has meant those chances are limited.
Still, for Tsimikas, there are no regrets a little more than a year after making the switch from Athens of Anfield, as he always knew playing time would be a more difficult to come by with Liverpool—and getting even the chance to play for the Reds was always his dream.
“It was a surprise to every guy in Greece because moving to Liverpool is a very, very big step,” Tsimikas told the club’s official website. “Some couldn’t imagine it was real. I am very happy and very proud because all this work I did all these years, it paid off.
“My family [was] happy because for them it was something really special and very big. And for me also, and I’m really happy about that. It was one of my biggest dreams to play in a big club and it was Liverpool, because my family were big supporters of Liverpool.”
The goal, though, isn’t simply to be part of the Liverpool squad—it’s to be a key player. And already this season, Tsimikas has five appearances in the club’s first ten games in all competitions and is closing in on his total of seven appearances from last season.
Some of that is due to Robertson missing the opening weeks of the season, but with as impressive as Tsimikas’ performances in his stead were it seems certain he will be given more chances with the Reds set to play two games a week for the foreseeable future.
“The first thing I had in my mind when the season started was to play more games than last year,” he added. “First of all is to stay healthy, the second is to make assists, and the third is to win all the games. These are my goals, and [also] to win trophies with this team.
“Last year I couldn’t because I had the injuries and I had COVID also, and the team was in a tough situation. After all [that], I am very happy because I work hard and I showed I can. I showed first of all to myself I can do everything. And I am very happy for that.”
