Official: Emma Koivisto To Join AC Milan

Leicester City v Liverpool FC - Barclays Women¥s Super League

The defender was set to leave with her contract expiring.

Emma Koivisto was expected to leave this summer, as her contract had not been renewed. It’s now been confirmed by the official site that her new destination is AC Milan. The defender will complete the transfer on Monday after her Liverpool contract officially ends.

Koivisto joined the Reds in 2022 from Brighton and Hove Albion. She helped the team in their bid to reestablish themselves in the top flight. Altogether, Koivisto made 51 appearances for the Reds in her two years with the team.

The Finland international was deployed as a defensive right wing in Matt Beard’s typical 2-5-3 formation.

Looking at the current available squad members, only young Lucy Parry fits in that position. It’s likely that the club either has a replacement in mind, having known about Koivisto’s departure for some time now, or considers it a priority to find a player to fill her shoes. This is going off the likely assumption that Beard plans to retain his current formation next year.

The Reds, having first stayed up in the WSL in 2022-23 and then managed to make it into the top half of the table last season, want to push on a challenge for a European spot this coming season. All thought of transfers will be with that goal in mind. Hopefully their upward trajectory will entice some high quality players from around Europe.
