Reports out of Portugal have the Sporting centre half a top targets for the summer transfer window and new manager Arne Slot.

There have been some major changes at Liverpool this summer off the pitch, with the arrival of Arne Slot to replace Jürgen Klopp in the manager’s role and the return of Michael Edwards behind the scenes as the club’s director of football and with him new sporting director Richard Hughes.

When it comes to the squad, though, we’re now into pre-season and with the first friendlies of the summer not too far off on the horizon and have yet to see movement in the transfer market. According to reports out of Portugal, though, that could be set to change with the Reds making a push to sign Gonçalo Inácio.

The 22-year-old Portuguese centre half is no stranger to Liverpool links, having been proposed as a potential defensive signing last summer, which makes it hard to say for certain if any new links to him reflect genuine current interest and a return or if it’s simply easy content for the churn.

On paper, though, as was the case last summer there’s a lot to like about the imposing, mobile Portugal international—aside, perhaps, from a €60M release clause Sporting aren’t said to be much interesting in haggling over. It’s a fee that one could really only imagine the Reds splashing on a new starter.

Inevitably, then, the question becomes is Inácio good enough to start ahead of Ibrahima Konaté and partner Virgil van Dijk when everybody is fit. And the answer there is far from certain. The rapidly developing Jarell Quansah then has to be considered, too—a player who today might well be Inácio’s equal.

Depending on Joe Gomez’ deployment—and considering his and Konaté’s injury histories—there’s at least a case for more centre half depth, but given the current depth chart it’s hard to look at Inácio’s cost and need for minutes and see an obvious Liverpool target for the summer of 2024.
