Klopp returned to coaching but only for a testimonial.

Former Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp made a return to coaching on Saturday as the Normal One manned the sideline at a testimonial match for Polish and Borussia Dortmund legends Łukasz Piszczek and Jakub Błaszczykowski. It was a strictly Dortmund affair as Piszczek and Błaszczykowski played on opposite teams, with Klopp heading up Piszczek’s side.

It was a thoroughly delightful time, if the BVB social media feed is to be believed, as the social media manager did a terrific job managing to highlight Klopp’s return while not letting it outshine the fact that the entire occasion was meant for the two players. For Klopp’s part, he looked incredibly happy and gregarious, which must mean that this is what Klopp is like when the only question before him is what he wants to do.

I, of course, don’t begrudge him a moment of that time for himself as he’s more than earned the privilege to live - as he described it - a normal life for any amount of time. But looking at the photos and seeing the video of him acknowledging the Yellow Wall definitely made me misty. I miss Jurgen Klopp. And while I don’t think he owes anyone a damn thing, I do feel that the world of football misses that sense of joviality and a manager whose interior life contained enough space to both obsess over football, while acknowledging routinely that that there is more to life than this wonderful, silly game.

We could use more folks in all fields, but especially in top-flight athletics, that show you can maintain intensity and commitment to achievement while rejecting the life-or-death framing so often used in sport.

Anyway, have a look at one of my favorite moments and remember, with me, the amazing times we had when this guy held the keys to Liverpool.
