Rumour Mongering: Real Madrid Shopping Tchouameni

Love to revisit an old transfer rumour.

Liverpool FC’s long-documented woes with acquiring a defensive midfielder really began two years ago, when their attempted pursuit of Aurélien Tchouaméni was foiled by Real Madrid, with the Frenchman preferring to join Los Blancos days after the two teams met in the UEFA Champions League final.

According to journalists Jorge C. Picón and Alfredo Matilla of Relevo, Real Madrid are apparently prepared to listen to offers for the player.

A TL;DR summary:

  • Tchouameni is losing support within Real Madrid
  • The board values Camavinga over Tchouameni, although Ancelotti still sees the latter as the best DM option for now
  • They are considering bringing in Rodri to replace him

Now, this news has set off some discussions of Tchouameni or Zubimendi on the app formerly known as the blue shouty bird app, which is frankly, a hilarious discussion because both players turned down Liverpool.

If I had to choose, I’d lean Zubimendi because he seems to be a better fit for what Slot wants in his system, while Tchouameni was meant to replace Fabinho. But as we know with Liverpool, the long-term interest in a prospect is real, and they won’t be deterred simply because he’s been in a poor patch of form. The price and how our head coach seems him fitting into our system will be the question here.
