Rumour Mongering: Real Madrid Believe Alexander-Arnold a “Done Deal”

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s demonstrative celebration on the weekend fuelled hope amongst some Liverpool fans, but realistically he’s still likely to depart at season’s end.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s demonstrative, shirt-off celebration after scoring the winning goal for Liverpool against Leicester City over the weekend in a game that took them within three points of securing the 2024-25 Premier League title has received plenty of attention.
That the homegrown star won’t sign a new Liverpool deal and will instead join Real Madrid in the summer when his contract runs down has been the consensus for some time, but with nothing yet official there some saw that and wondered if the situation might have changed.
Realistically, it probably won’t have, and ex-Red Jan Mølby says everyone he has talked to with connections to Real Madrid in recent months does in fact see the signing of Alexander-Arnold as something of a fait accompli at this point.
“There’s not one single person in and around Real Madrid who doesn’t believe that he’s joined them,” Mølby said on his podcast with TLO-alum Trevor Downey earlier this week. “They all seem to think that, you know, that it’s a done deal and has been for a while.”
While acknowledging that in the moment of celebration Alexander-Arnold “didn’t look like somebody who was joining Real Madrid, he looked like somebody who scored an important goal for the club he loves,” Mølby doesn’t think it goes any deeper than that—a moment of cathartic celebration after taking the Reds one step closer to a title.
Realistically, that’s probably all it was. For those invested in the idea of a contract u-turn, though, ex-Pre footballer Ben Foster took to his podcast this week to push the idea that Alexander-Arnold’s celebration might mean more.
“I’m genuinely not sure now,” he noted. “It’s the way that he looks at the crowd, I think we can read into this a little. As it stands, you’re a Liverpool legend and they love you, but if you were to sign a new deal today or tomorrow you’re in the history books of that club forever.”
