Liverpool Beaten to Kennet Eichhorn Signing by Bayer Leverkusen
As the 2025-26 season wound down, Liverpool began to be heavily linked with 16year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder Kennet Eichhorn. They weren’t alone, though, with everyone from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City also said to be ready and willing to trigger his €10M release clause as sign him.
For a time, Liverpool were even presented as favourites to sign him. In the end, though, over the past week there has been a growing rumbling that the youngster and his family had decided that at this stage in his career he was better off staying in Germany rather than heading abroad to continue his development.
In the end, that chatter has turned out to have been correct. Eichhorn will indeed stay in Germany and has chosen to move to Bayer Leverkusen, who are now set to trigger his release and complete the signing of the rising star defensive midfielder before that clause comes off the table at the end of the month.
It will of course be disappointing to Liverpool, and that so many clubs were lining up ready to pay €10M to sign a 16-year-old who even in the best case scenario likely is a few years away from being a first team regular—though he did play 18 games in the Bundesliga.2 last season—says a lot about Eichhorn’s talent.
Still, at the end of the day Eichhorn was a player being targeted for his future rather than for the present, and had he been signed it wouldn’t have been with the expectation that he would be near the top of the midfield pecking order with the Reds or playing more than League Cup minutes in the coming season.
