Daniel Sturridge Rejects Newcastle for West Bromwich Albion

Unless things change again, Sturridge appears set to join the relegation battling Baggies.

Daniel Sturridge’s future is not at Anfield, but where it is he’s going to end up seems to change by the hour. This is not the transfer saga Liverpool fans were hoping for, but with Jürgen Klopp insisting the club have no plans to replace Philippe Coutinho this month it may be all they get.

A day ago, Inter Milan appeared the only viable option, and with the striker resisting the Serie A side’s approach a Liverpool stay appeared on the cards. Today, Newcastle formalised their interest and for a brief time became favourites to sign the striker for the rest of the 2017-18 season.

Now, he appears headed to West Brom, with The Telegraph reporting he is set for a medical there later today. Newcastle, meanwhile, were fully expecting Sturridge to arrive for a medical today—but are now trying to adjust to it appearing as though he will not be on his way.

From the outside, this is a surprise. Newcastle with Rafa Benitez sit 15th and Sturridge could have helped ensure their Premier League survival while perhaps earning a longer-term future at the club. West Brom, despite having defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup on Saturday, are a far shakier proposition.

They sit 19th in the league and manager Alan Pardew has failed to get their season on track since signing on to replace Tony Pulis in November. Sturridge, though, must presumably see in them a better chance to resurrect his career. Assuming, of course, this is the deal that goes through.
