Liverpool Reportedly Not Interested in Summer Striker Signings

It’s always best to take a club’s pronouncements on the transfer front with a grain of salt, especially in the offseason. Still, if the club are to be believed, striker is a settled position heading into the summer as Jürgen Klopp likes his options up top.

This comes on the heels of speculation in Germany that Timo Werner could be heading to Liverpool in the offseason, a pricey potential move that would either force a tactical rethink or see Werner relegated to backup behind Roberto Firmino.

There will be no need of figuring that out, though. At least according to The Liverpool Echo, who speaking in their role of club mouthpiece today have come out to say that striker will not be a position of need for the club heading into the summer.

That Roberto Firmino is and will remain first choice isn’t surprising news—not only do his 23 goals and 13 assists rank favourably amongst any of Europe’s top strikers, but his play at the tip of the attack is integral to getting the most out of Mohamed Salah.

Yet even acknowledging Firmino’s quality and importance, there are questions about depth at the position. The problem, though, is with a striker both as good and unique as Firmino, bringing in an upgrade to back him up is easier said than done.

So Liverpool will stick with their current options—with Danny Ings, who at least in theory fits the mold stylistically and in his willingness to work, and with the added option of shifting either Salah or Sadio Mané to striker in a pinch.

They will also look to develop more depth from within, with Dominic Solanke a year older and more experienced and 17-year-old starlet Rhian Brewster set to be promoted to regular first team duties in time for next season.
