Watford Midfielder “Dreams” of Liverpool Move

Abdoulaye Doucouré says he’d love a move to Anfield. Whether that means the club are in for him is another question.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of potential midfield signings for the six role next season, and even if as yet he hasn’t been one of them, Watford’s 25-year-old Frenchman Abdoulaye Doucouré would love to end up in the mix and to end up at Anfield.

The Watford midfielder has had a strong season so far, maybe even one good enough to earn that sort of a move, and he says that moving to Watford in the wintrer of 2016 was always a first step—a step towards a move to a bigger club like Liverpool.

“Liverpool is a club that needs no introduction,” Doucouré told Canal+ over the weekend when asked about his future. “I was impatient to play there at Anfield, I wanted to feel the atmosphere. For me it would be a dream to play in a club like this.”

A club like Liverpool might not mean Liverpool is where he ends up, of course, and he has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United in recent months, with rumours Watford would seek out a fee in the region of £40M if he were to go.

Still, it rather looks like if he had the option of picking his next destination there’s a rather good chance that’s where it would be. And on his form this season at least, there’s a case to be made that he’d make a good option for the base of Liverpool’s midfield.

So far, the two players most reliably linked in that role have been Napoli’s Jorghinho and Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi, which for some has been a bit of a head-scratcher—because while Jorginho seems to fit as a creative six, Ndidi is something of a pure destroyer.

Doucouré, on the other hand, with seven goals and three assists in 30 league games this season, seems—like Jorginho—far more likely to fit the mold based on what people tend to think manager Jürgen Klopp would look for from a player at the position.

Does that mean Doucouré’s talk of Anfield might be driven by more than idle daydreams—that maybe he’s thinking about a move because there’s been contact? It’s at least plausible, though plausible is a long was from likely and could happen.

“If there is an offer, we will discuss to find the best solution,” he added. “Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, the big competitions.”
