Rumour Mongering: Emre Can Contemplates A Return To Bayern Munich

Emre Can has been trying his best to ensure that his looming contract situation isn’t overshadowing a promising Liverpool campaign. What was once a nailed-on transfer to Juventus has come into question as the 24-year-old has reconsidered staying in England as well as potentially returning to his old club, Bayern Munich

The German midfielder had come up through the famous Bavarian club’s youth academy, but left for Bayer Leverkeusen in 2014 after struggling to break into the Bayern first team, ultimately joining Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool less than a year later.

Despite some rough going in his four years on Merseyside, the Reds no. 23 has experienced more ups than downs in his time at the club, establishing himself as first choice this season in Jürgen Klopp’s defensive midfield as captain Jordan Henderson has experienced a physical decline.

However, with a mooted move back to the continent mooted at the end of his contract in June, the failure of Can to prove himself at the famous Bavarian club has been rumoured to be weighing on his mind, speculation the midfielder has shot down:

”No, definitely not,” Can told Sport1 in an interview when asked if he regretted leaving the German powerhouse.

”Today you can see that it was the right decision. At that time it was like this: [then manager] Pep Guardiola had come, and I had played a good preparation under him. Then we had a very, very honest conversation.

”I was very young and it was important for me to play a lot. He told me honestly: ‘I cannot guarantee you now that you will play every week’.

”Then I saw the opportunity in Leverkusen. They also played in the Champions League. For many it was a step backwards. But for me it was a step forward because I always played in Leverkusen. Today you can see that it has paid off.”

There have been tenuous rumours that Bayern are interested in bringing their academy product back into the fold as is there habit with talented German players.

When asked if his former club had erred in letting him leave in the first place, Can was quick to deny this as well, “I would not say that. Whether they have made a mistake, they have to decide for themselves.”

The rumour mill has linked his current employers at Liverpool to a number of targets who would potentially usurp Can in the first team consideration, and now, as before when he left Bayern, the decision centers around where he think he will be in a position to develop and achieve his goals as a player:

”I want to become a world-class player,” he stated. “Maybe once in the world selection. That would be great.”
