Rumour Mongering: Reds Consider Move for Chelsea Target Malcom
Liverpool could try to beat Chelsea to the Bordeaux winger if their attempts to sign Fekir stall.
With Liverpool’s attempts to sign Nabil Fekir dragging on longer than the club would like, it’s perhaps not surprising that alternatives have begun to appear in the press, names to fill the void left by the absence of Fekir news and, just maybe, Plan Bs for the club.
Over the past day, outlets in France have begun to push Bordeaux winger Malcom as a possible Liverpool target. The problem, if he is to be Fekir’s Plan B, is that Chelsea are also being linked with him and there are suggestions he isn’t far from sealing a €50M move.
According to L’Equipe and Sud-Ouest, Chelsea are closing in on the 21-year-old Brazilian who mainly plays on the right but can line up anywhere across the attack—and who the Reds were tentatively linked to in January as a potential Philippe Coutinho replacement.
That move never materialised and Malcom to Liverpool now looks like a long-shot with Fekir the top priority and Chelsea said to have already begun discussing terms with the player’s representatives, meaning he doesn’t look likely to be available for much longer.
Still, if the groundwork for signing Malcom was laid in January and Liverpool come to believe a Fekir deal isn’t possible, there’s always a chance they could use the promise of Champions League football and a stable coaching situation to swoop and beat the Blues.
