Gerrard tells Henderson his time will come

Jordan Henderson received a phone call from Steven Gerrard, the man who preceded him as Liverpool captain, in the wake of England’s World Cup exit on Wednesday night reassuring him that he will soon taste great success.

Henderson had been in excellent form throughout the tournament but could not prevent the Three Lions falling to Croatia at the penultimate hurdle.

It was another gut-wrenching blow for the Reds skipper after defeat in May’s Champions League Final, but Gerrard says he should be proud of his displays.

“I’ve been one of his defenders over the last couple of years when he’s had his critics about because I know the player and I know the person,” the Liverpool legend told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I spoke to him last night after the game and I said to him: ‘Look. I know you’ll be hurting right now but you should come back into the country with your head held high’.

“His time will come. He’s getting so, so close to one of these trophies and a big success in his career, and it will be making of him and people will realise the player and the leader he is.”

Henderson has received widespread for plaudits over the course of the World Cup, with many of his former critics admitting their view of the dogged midfielder had been transformed.

“He has absolutely emptied the tank for both England and Liverpool this year,” Gerrard said.

“He ran out of steam a little bit in extra-time, but he’s absolutely given everything for club and country and I think he’s had a fantastic season.

“People are starting to appreciate him now, whereas I’ve appreciated him all along.”

England still have one more game to play – the third-place playoff against Belgium – but Henderson will soon be able to enjoy a break before linking back up with the Liverpool squad ahead of the new season.

Liverpool team-mate Dejan Lovren will be gunning for the ultimate prize on Sunday when Croatia take on France in the final.
