Liverpool Not Interested in Alisson Despite Italian Reports of a Nearly Done Deal

According to journalists with ties to the club, news out of Italy of a nearly done deal are well wide of the mark.

Despite a brief flurry of Italian reports claiming a deal to send Roma goalkeeper Alisson to Liverpool was done or nearly so, sources with ties to the club believe this is not the case and that the club have long since moved on from the Brazilian shot stopper.

The day got off to a positive start for Liverpool fans still hoping for Alisson’s signing when Gazzetta dello Sport led off claiming that a €65M bid had been submitted, comprising a €60M base fee plus add-ons, and that Roma would be willing to sell at that price.

If that had been true it would have given Liverpool the all clear to open negotiations with the player formally—though suggestions Alisson was still holding out hope for Real Madrid to make a late, formal move for him might still have delayed any deal.

According to The Mirror’s David Maddock, though—the club-tied journalist who has been first to report news on Fabinho and Nabil Fekir this summer—there is no bid. More than that, Liverpool have moved on and have no interest in signing Alisson at this stage.

With Liverpool fans looking at incumbent Loris Karius’ shaky pre-season performance against Tranmere and feeling all kinds of uncertain about the club’s future in goal all over again, it’s perhaps not the news many of them will have wanted to hear.

Yet for all the concerns over Karius, there are reasons to doubt Alisson—who made many of the kinds of mistakes Karius is often faulted for against Liverpool in the Champions League and with Brazil at the World Cup—would have been a marked improvement.

That Alisson might not actually be worth a €65M fee doesn’t help to solve Liverpool’s rather shaky goalkeeping situation, but it could perhaps help with making everyone feel a little better about the club’s apparent decision to abandon the pursuit.
