Xherdan Shaqiri Joined Liverpool to Win “Titles and Trophies”

Liverpool’s new signing says he joined a side where he will have to fight for minutes because he wants to win.

Liverpool’s new signings have impressed so far during pre-season, with Naby Keïta and Fabinho looking well worth the effort the club went to to signing them. Next up, Xherdan Shaqiri, who joined up with the club this week following his post-World Cup break.

The Swiss international is looking forward to getting back in the action, having made the move from Stoke City to Anfield because he says his goal is to win titles and trophies—and of all his potential destinations, Liverpool were the one he felt offered the best shot at that.

“I think we can,” Shaqiri told Sky when asked if he joined Liverpool seeking silverware. “We have quality, especially with the players that have been brought in. I think the important thing is to be successful, and to be successful you need to win some titles and trophies.”

It won’t be easy—it never is—but on paper, a Liverpool squad that last season maintained a top four finish while making it all the way to the Champions League final has only gotten stronger, making them the most likely side to challenge Manchester City for the league.

That quality that Shaqiri added to also means playing time will be harder to come by, but he doesn’t consider that a problem—he joined Liverpool to win, and sides that win have quality and depth that means having to prove your own in every game and training session.

“You always have competition everywhere in the world,” he said. “We are a big team, there are big players here, and everyone is going to fight for his place but in the end we have to be successful as a team. And you need every player to be successful in a long season.

“The coach knows my quality and he knows I can play lots of different positions in front so I think that is going to be positive for the team and we can be more variable in the games.”
