Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Looking for Delayed Pulisic Deal

The Reds could be looking to tie up the US prodigy a year in advance.

Michael Edwards and the rest of Liverpool’s transfer team has been tearing it up recently, with 2018 the third consecutive summer of shrewd, well-reasoned acquisitions that fit into the long-term strategy of the football club. FSG have backed their football men with money where necessary, while the expensive duds of seasons past have been eliminated altogether.

Not every transfer has been completed as promptly as Fabinho’s shock announcement back in May, however, with Virgil van Dijk arriving six months after the Reds were sent reeling by Southampton among accusations of tapping up the player, and Naby Keïta’s deal saw the Guinean remain at RB Leipzig for a full year before making his move to Merseyside. Liverpool are in it for the long-term, though, and a delayed transfer is no reason to fret, as long as they get their man.

Now, reports out of Germany are claiming the Reds are back at it again, this time with an eye on wrapping up Christian Pulisic. The American’s current contract runs out in 2020, and if it turns out Dortmund can’t convince him to extend it, the rumour mongerers assert, they would not be opposed to making a deal this summer, with the move taking place at the end of the season.

On paper, it is one of those mythical everybody wins-scenarios, where the player is granted his move, the selling club get a higher fee than they could expect for a player entering the last year of his contract, and the buying club can go into the season knowing they won’t have to battle it out for the player in question next summer.

The logic is sound, and corroborated by Raphael Honigstein, but, beyond the player’s father confirming that the Premier League is an attractive destination, there is nothing in the way of affirmation from either club or their media representatives. Nonetheless, with Pulisic a gifted youngster in a position of need and the Liverpool consistently clinching astute transactions, it’s worth keeping an eye on.
