Deeney admits Van Dijk is forward’s nightmare

Watford striker Troy Deeney admits that he ‘hates’ facing Virgil van Dijk given that the towering centre-half has all the attributes required to stop him.

Van Dijk has overseen a defensive resurgence at Liverpool since his arrival last January.

This season, he has led the backline to four clean sheets in their first six league games.

His impressive performances have prompted some to dub him the best centre-back in the Premier League, and Deeney, who is currently enjoying his fourth season in the top flight with Watford, says he is an absolute nightmare to go up against.

“I’ve said it many times, I hate him. I hate going up against him,” the Englishman told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He’s too big, too strong, too quick, too good on the ball, loves fighting, a good head of hair!

“When he runs past you, it’s like ‘I can’t catch you’.”

Deeney also praised Van Dijk’s defensive partner Joe Gomez, who has started the campaign in fine fettle.

He reckons the ‘beastly’ youngster has a very bright future ahead of him for both club and country.

“I’ve said for a very long time that I’ve got a massive respect for Joe Gomez,” he said.

“He could be England’s centre-half for the next 15 years.

“He is a beast of a player. And going next to someone like Van Dijk, he is only going to get better.”
