Fekir ‘too great a risk’ for Liverpool unless deal is revised

Liverpool will not go back in for Nabil Fekir unless Lyon agree to change the structure of the deal, the Echo‘s James Pearce says.

The deal for Fekir was virtually finalised when the club chose to pull the plug, having grown concerned about a knee problem.

According to Pearce, Liverpool thought it too great a risk to shell out around £53million for a player who may have wound up spending a considerable period on the sidelines.

The Reds failed to sign an alternative attacking midfield option, despite it being their supposed priority at the beginning of the window.

That led to speculation that, since Klopp had clearly identified the Frenchman as a top target, Liverpool would attempt to resurrect the deal at some point.

Fekir issued a reminder of his quality when he scored an excellent winner against Manchester City in the Champions League group stages last week.

Pearce, though, says he would be ‘surprised’ if Liverpool made another move for the 25-year-old.

He reckons the structure of the deal would have to change significantly to convince the club that the supposed gamble was worthwhile.

Lyon are looking to tie their captain, who was excited by the prospect of joining Jurgen Klopp’s side, down to a new contract but have thus far been unsuccessful.
