Lovren queries Salah’s World XI omission

Dejan Lovren has questioned how Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah missed out on a spot in Fifa’s World XI despite being voted the third best player of 2018.

Salah received just over 11% of the vote in the competition for the Best Men’s Player Award, finishing third behind winner Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, he was denied a place in the World XI’s three-man attack, which was formed from the votes of 25,000 players worldwide.

The Egyptian netted 44 goals in all competitions in his staggering debut season at Anfield, but PSG teenager Kylian Mbappe, a World Cup winner in the summer, beat him to a spot in the XI.

This left Reds defender Lovren rather bemused, with the Croatian captioning an Instagram photo alongside Salah ‘top 3 in the world, but not good enough for the best 11!?!’.

There was some consolation for Salah, though, as his curling Merseyside Derby strike won the Puskas Award.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp was voted the fifth best men’s coach after leading his side to the Champions League final.

The German’s 7.2% share of the vote was more than that of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde and Juventus’ Max Allegri.
