Red Star Supporters are Banned From Away Match at Liverpool

The Serbian side have been disciplined by UEFA for the conduct of their supporters at FC Salzburg last season.

Anfield is set to be packed wall to wall with Liverpool supporters for the visit of Red Star Belgrade on October 24. The Serbian club have been banned by UEFA from selling tickets to their first two Champions League group stage away matches.

Red Star are being punished for a pitch invasion and subsequent damage after a surprising win over FC Salzburg that sealed the club’s first appearance in the Champions League since 1991. Fireworks were set off in the Salzburg stadium and there was probably a lot of your general mayhem and destruction. UEFA weren’t pleased.

In addition to the banning of away support, the Serbian side have been fined €30,000 and are on the hook for the damages to Salzburg. Somewhere in that stadium a urinal remains shattered on the floor, smashed in a fit of blind elation by a Red Star supporter, unaware that his actions were far more embarassing than the stains of pee they left on his clothes.

This isn’t Red Star’s first bust up with the law. You might be surprised to read that the previous match in the tie between Red Star and Salzburg, the one that eventually resulted in the pitch invasion, was played behind closed doors in Belgrade because Red Star was being disciplined for tolerating a racist fan base.

There’s likely to be a small contingent of Red Star support at Anfield that October night, finding tickets in their own ways, but it could be a unique opportunity for Liverpool fans to fill the whole stadium for a European tie.
