The Ryder Cup captain revealed he received a special message from his all-time Liverpool hero, Steven Gerrard, who sent his best wishes for the 42nd edition of the tournament to Bjorn.

“If there was ever a hero of a football club, but also a hero of mine, it was probably always him with the way he carried himself, the way he led a team and the player he was on the pitch,” Bjorn told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Everybody respect and admires that. The character he has always shown in his game but also as a person has been immense.

“You see people and meet people along the way and they help you form an idea of what you want to be. Steven is always somebody that people admire for his captaincy role.

“There are obviously a lot of people within the golfing world but also outside the golfing world who play a role in who you become when you get a role where you have to lead.

“He has been a great inspiration for a lot of young people but also an inspiration for somebody like me; for his character and the way he has represented something that I hold dear to my heart and so many people hold dear to their hearts. He is just an exceptional person.”
