Klopp Talk: This Win Is Just the Next Step

Today’s 4-1 victory puts Liverpool at the top of the table, but Klopp is focused on the next game.
A 4-1 win at home before a week off sounds like what we spent the last month wishing for, so it’s pretty great that it’s finally happened. Liverpool saw a (mostly) comfortable win against Cardiff City today, with stunning goals from Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri, as well as a brace from Sadio Mané (now with 50 goals in the Premier League). And while the win has put us back at the top of the table, the Boss isn’t really concerned about that right now.
“[Getting three points] for us is just the next step, so that’s cool,” Klopp said in his post-match comments. “Now we have time to recover — first time for a lot of the boys that they don’t play in three days again and our international players haven’t had that since I don’t know when — so we will use the time to recover and prepare for the Arsenal game, which will be another nice challenge.”
Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Red Star Belgrade earlier this week also placed them at the top of Group C in the Champions League, but neither performance was convincing enough to afford any laurel-sitting for the Reds. Cardiff’s goal today was the first Premier League goal that Liverpool has let in at home since February 2018. Klopp is pretty pleased with how Liverpool reacted to that goal, however.
“When they scored to make it 2-1, we controlled it immediately again and we used the space,” he said. “Usually you could get under pressure again, but we defended their throw-ins really well today, which is really difficult, especially the second ball. We did it well, but the goal they scored, they deserved it.”
“The boys did well and I am fine.”
