Milner’s Injury Still to Be Assessed

The midfielder was replaced after a hamstring injury in the first half.

After a whirlwind few weeks of games, it’s probably lucky that the Reds only have one injury to fret about as we head into international break. Unfortunately, the injured party in this case is midfield stalwart, James Milner, so all Liverpool fans are presumably going to spend the next two weeks researching hamstring donations and transplants.

Milner hobbled off the pitch in the first half hour of Sunday’s game against Manchester City with a hamstring problem, but downplayed the seriousness of the situation to Klopp before heading down the tunnel.

“I asked him whether it was a big [injury], and he said ‘I don’t think so, but big enough that I go off’,” Klopp said in the post-match briefing.

Milner started six of Liverpool’s seven games in the last twenty-three days, and was a half-time substitute in the last one. His injury is probably a good reason to start thinking about increased rotation when the squad returns from its two week break to take on Huddersfield in the Premier League and Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

Whether or not Milner will be available for either of those games remains to be seen: the extent of his injury will be assessed by the club’s medical team today.
