The Headline You May Have Missed: Mohamed Salah’s Record-Breaking Ways Continue...

His two goals in the Champions League against Red Star Belgrade saw Salah become the fastest player to score 50 Liverpool goals
Given that we live in the age of sensationalism where a fire can be conjured without legitimate smoke, you would be forgiven if the magnitude of Mohamed Salah’s latest feat completely passed you by. After ending last season on a total Liverpool goal tally of 44 in all competitions and scoring four goals in the Premier League thus far this season, Salah added two (bringing his UCL total to 14) more to his account during Liverpool’s Champions’ League group stage match on Wednesday night and slotted himself into the record books yet again.
Since the current season began, the narrative in some media circles has been about whether he’d be able to replicate last season’s form and subsequently, after a few games of not scoring, Salah’s “lack” in the goal department was deemed more newsworthy than Liverpool’s incredible unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Following his superb performance against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, I naively expected to see more headlines relaying messages around Salah being back to his best or perhaps about his return to form; given that Mo did more than a few Mo Salah type things than he has since the season started.
Instead, the media were far more concerned that Mo did not celebrate scoring in his usual way than they were about lauding him for his latest achievement which does beg the question (for me, anyway) about whether certain media outlets employ actual sports writers who watch a full 90 minutes of a football match before reporting on it as part of their job. The Reds were rampant against the Red-and-whites and Salah was swift and superb, scoring shortly before half time at 45 minutes and again at 51 minutes after converting a penalty with ease and precision.
With that, Mohamed Salah has become the quickest player to score 50 goals for Liverpool Football Club by scoring 50 in 65 games for the club, adding yet another achievement to his incredible list of accolades. This time Salah broke a record that has stood the test of time for 70 years and held by Albert Stubbins who reached 50 LFC goals in 77 matches.
The Fastest to 50 LFC goal club
Mohamed Salah – 65 appearances
Albert Stubbins – 77 appearances
Roger Hunt – 79 appearances
George Allan – 81 appearances
Jack Parkinson – 81 appearances
Sam Raybould – 81 appearances
Fernando Torres – 84 appearances
Daniel Sturridge – 87 appearances
Luis Suarez – 91 appearances
John Aldridge – 92 appearances
Michael Owen – 93 appearances
Robbie Fowler – 94 appearances
Kenny Dalglish – 99 appearances
In his post-match interview with BT Sport, Mo expressed his joy at reaching yet another incredible milestone but quickly turned the attention towards Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané who also scored on Wednesday, saying:
I’m happy to score 50 goals for Liverpool. I’m very proud about that and I hope to keep scoring to help the team win games.
It was an important game. We knew before the game it was going to be tough, but the most important thing for us is the three points. We are doing well now.
We know how to play with each other. We know our quality and we are happy with each other.
And we as Liverpool supporters, are more than happy with you, Mohamed Salah. Y.N.W.A.
