Van Dijk on Klopp’s managerial demands and Salah’s form

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk believes Jurgen Klopp has the full backing of his players, all of whom will do exactly as their manager demands of them during an upcoming crucial period in their season.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s midweek clash with Napoli, the Dutchman was also keen to stress the importance of teamwork for the long campaign ahead.

“You have to (understand), otherwise you better leave,” said Van Dijk of Klopp’s methods, as quoted in the Telegraph. “We all want one thing, we all want to be successful, everyone, and we need everyone’s help.

“It’s a long season with a lot of games, we need everyone and everyone knows that as well, and that’s a big strength for us. Everyone is doing their bit because the season is long.”

One player who appears to be struggling so far is Mohamed Salah, whose recent performances have not matched up with what fans know he’s capable of. The Egyptian has failed to hit the dizzying heights of last season’s campaign, though his goal return is only slightly diminished.

Klopp, however, is adamant that Salah will eventually turn things around and leave many critics with egg on their faces. The German was asked of Salah is currently happy with his performances, and responded in a matter-of-fact way.

“Of course not. How could he?,” said Klopp. “Of course not. Now, that is what you have a manager for. We will have a talk about it.

“It is easy for me because I do not read what you write, but the boys do a little bit more. You will now do like a doctor, dissect. A big nice cut and, wow, you will find pretty much nothing. Then it will be good – at the end whatever you write you will say sorry afterwards.”

And Van Dijk was quick to reiterate what his manager said about Salah.

“He’s still the same Mo and he needs a bit of luck as well, I’m not worried at all and he should not be worried either,” said the towering Number Four. “We do it all together, we’ll always be there for him and he’ll deliver as well. He had a tough game, but it’s part of football.

“We are seven games in, the season is very long, he’s working hard and is doing it in training.”

Liverpool next take on Napoli on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
