Besiktas Determined to Make Loris Karius Transfer Permanent

Despite uncertainty fuelled by media speculation, Besiktas’ president insists Karius’ future is with the club.

Goalkeeper Loris Karius departed Liverpool for Besiktas over the summer on an initial two-year loan that included a clause intended to make the deal permanent at its end if certain appearance and club performance benchmarks were met.

For all intents and purposes, it marked the end of his time as a Liverpool player even if there remains some slight, small window of uncertainty—a slight, small window of uncertainty too many rumour mongers have been eager to seize on.

It’s been more than a little tiresome, to be perfectly honest. And it seems that no less than the president of Besiktas would agree with that, as he hit out this week at reports that Karius could somehow end up returned to Liverpool this season.

“Karius is an excellent keeper,” president Fikret Orman told Harberle. “God willing we will sign him on a permanent transfer. These stories are complete nonsense. Give Karius some time is all I’m saying. Karius has work to do but give him time.”

In a reasonable world, that would be the end of it—the Turkish press would stop speculating about Karius which would mean the English press would stop picking up on their stories and we’d stop having to acknowledge that those stories exist.

Karius could then go about the difficult task of rebuilding his career over the next season or two and, if all went to plan, become a Besiktas player permanently. Of course, reasonable and rumour mongering rarely go hand in hand.

For the time being at least, though, Loris Karius is a Besiktas player and they want to see his deal become permanent as per the initial agreement with Liverpool and the goalkeeper’s future seems entirely settled.
