Klopp Talk: Henderson’s Sending Off Not Unfair

Not a good day for the captain.

What was a very routine 3-0 win was marred somewhat by Jordan Henderson’s second yellow card, seeing Liverpool go down to ten men and Henderson ruled out of the Merseyside derby next weekend. And it doesn’t seem like Jürgen Klopp thinks Henderson covered himself in glory.

“I think they were both yellow cards, but things like this happen”, the Liverpool Echo report Klopp as saying.

“You play in a defensive midfield situation and I don’t know how many challenges Hendo had today or situations where he had to be closing the player or space.

“Twice, he was there with a hand. He made a tactical foul.

“With the second one, I didn’t like too much because we wanted to change in that situation. Fabinho was ready and then he (Henderson) got it.

“Things like this happen. It’s nothing serious. The only not-so-nice thing is that he cannot play against Everton. That’s already accepted, so nothing to say about that.”

Of course, this was not the only significant refereeing decision of the game. When Andy Robertson challenged Will Hughes inside the box, many of the home fans inside Vicarage Road felt it was a penalty (not in the view of this writer, though I am of course terribly biased).

“I haven’t seen the situation [replayed]”, Klopp added. “I only saw it with my eyes [at it happened] but I saw they were quite excited about that. He [Watford boss Javi Gracia] spoke even after we scored the third to the fourth official about it, but I didn’t see it to be honest. I have no clue.

“I thought in the first half, although I’m not sure, that when Sadio went in it looked like it could have been a penalty as well, but none of my players moaned in that situation so that’s probably not a good sign that it was one.”

A fairly honest and relaxed Klopp on the refereeing decisions today. In truth it’s hard to be too frustrated with anything after Liverpool win 3-0. Keep them coming.
