Nathaniel Clyne Nearing January Loan Move

Rumor is that the veteran fullback is looking for more playing time.

When Nathaniel Clyne got injured and subsequently lost his place to Trent Alexander-Arnold, it seemed only a matter of time before Clyne would start seeking out playing time elsewhere. The veteran English fullback has been back and fully fit but has not yet found a place in Jürgen Klopp’s airtight back line.

It’s understandable that many Premier League teams are jumping at these perceived opportunity to get their hands on a proven fullback for the back half of the season — and perhaps beyond.

There are several teams interested in acquiring his services in January, but according to The Mirror, the team who has come out in front so far is Cardiff City. Neil Warnock, who is currently Bluebirds’ manager, gave Clyne his debut at Crystal Palace and is hopeful that this connection will give him the advantage to get the job done.

Other teams said to be interested in Clyne are Fulham and Leicester. It’s likely that if he does leave, Clyne will slot right into the starting XI in whatever team he joins.

Clyne, who is 27-years-old, still has plenty of good years left. It would be a shame if he moved away from Anfield, because when given the opportunity, he does play well. This was shown again against Manchester United a few weeks ago. His presence also provides Klopp with more versatility in his selected line-ups, as well as insurance in the case of Alexander-Arnold and Gomez both being injured.

However, it’s completely reasonable for the player to want first team experience, and it would also make sense to send him out on loan in January to get some more playing time under his belt after missing almost a full year through back injury.

While Liverpool are unlikely to make any big moves in January after their huge summer transfer window, small but significant moves like this could still be in the cards.
