Rumor Mongering: Origi and Sturridge Out, Timo Werner In

According to the folks who make this stuff up, Klopp is planning on selling the two reserve strikers in order to land Werner.

Transfer rumors are a hell of a drug. The next hit comes in the form of a three player trifecta, Liverpool apparently looking to sell Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in order to make way for 22-year-old Timo Werner.

Now, Sturridge and Origi have both been linked away, separately, and Werner has been linked to Liverpool. So naturally it’ll all happen at the same time, right?

Werner is currently enjoying another good season with RB Leipzig, with 13 goals and 2 assists in 19 appearances for the Bundesliga club. Since joining Leipzig, Werner has 55 goals and 20 assists for the German newcomers in 98 games.

Prolific goalscoring aside, the fact that Werner can play through the middle or on the left would be a benefit to Klopp’s attack (especially considering the dearth of options after Sadio Mane).

Of course, there are problems with this rumor.

First of all, we know from the Naby Keita transfer saga just how much fun Leipzig are to deal with (hint: not a lot). Energy Drink currently sit 4th in the Bundesliga, and surely will prioritize Champions League qualification after just missing out last year.

From our perspective, Sturridge and Origi have contributed in meaningful and memorable ways off the bench. This is not to say either could not be improved upon, but it might disrupt team harmony during a campaign that sees us perfectly poised to end our long title drought. Moreover, it is unlikely that either (or both!) would get us anywhere near the £88 million it is rumored to cost for the young striker.

There are also problems with the rumor itself, which seem to have just miraculously spawned over the interwebs this morning (a virgin birth, if you will, in keeping with the season). Each article seems to link to yet another source, and frankly I’m too hungover to go any further down that rabbit hole.

Anyway, maybe this summer? After we’ve won the treble? Grand.
