Rumour Mongering: Chelsea to Swoop in on Nabil Fekir

Liverpool’s deal for the Lyon midfielder fell through last summer, and Chelsea looks ready to swoop in.

Liverpool’s £53 million deal with Lyon for Nabil Fekir was all but done when the Reds decided to walk away from it, likely after Fekir’s medical raised concerns about the midfielder’s knee and long-term injury issues that he may face as a result of it. Fekir required two surgeries in the space of twelve months after he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in September 2015. And the threat of further injuries means the Fekir-to-Liverpool dream is probably dead, something confirmed by James Pearce of the Echo in late-November.

With Liverpool out of the picture (except for the few people who keep trying to make Fekir-to-Anfield happen), it looks like Chelsea are leading the race to bring the midfielder to the Premier League. The rumours come from France this time, with L’Equipe reporting that Chelsea have recruited an experienced agent, Pini Zahavi, to iron out the details and complete the deal before the next season begins.

Fekir has eighteen months left on his contract with Lyon, so Zahavi and Chelsea have enough time to work out a deal and agree on a fee that works for everyone. Or, you know, Fekir can sign a new deal with Lyon and use the Chelsea interest to negotiate a higher salary. The point is, there’s a lot happening around the player, and none of it has to do with Liverpool.

At least there’s still a chance we might get to see Fekir at Anfield next season. Just not in the right colours.
