Liverpool F.C’s 2018-19 Premier League Mid-Season Review: Part 1

A brief look back at the 20 matches that saw Liverpool go unbeaten 

Before Liverpool succumbed to defeat at the Etihad on Thursday, they had been the only team left in the Premier League that were unbeaten at that point. 20 games, undefeated is nothing short of impressive and to soothe the pain we are all feeling, I thought we should reminisce.


The first 10 Premier League games


Match week 1: Anfield, Sunday, 12 August 2018
Referee: Anthony Taylor
Liverpool 4 – 0 West Ham

Goal scorers: Mohamed Salah 19’, Sadio Mané 45 +2’, 53’, Daniel Sturridge 88
Assists: Andrew Robertson 19’, James Milner 45 +2’, Roberto Firmino 53’

This was Liverpool’s 500th victory in the Premier League.

Match week 2: Selhurst Park, Monday, 20 August 2018
Referee: Michael Oliver
Crystal Palace 0 – 2 Liverpool

Goal scorers: James Milner 45’ (penalty), Sadio Mané 90 +3’
Assists: Mohamed Salah 90 +3

Liverpool ended this match week in second place and became the sixth club to win each of their first two fixtures.

Match week 3: Anfield, Saturday, 25 August 2018
Referee: Chris Kavanagh
Liverpool 1 – 0 Brighton and Hove Albion

Goal scorers: Mohamed Salah 23’
Assists: Roberto Firmino 23’

Despite 22 shots, eight of which were on target, Liverpool were unable to add another goal to this game.

Match week 4: King Power Stadium, Saturday, 1 September 2018
Referee: Paul Tierney
Leicester City 1 – 2 Liverpool

Goal scorers: Sadio Mané 10’, Roberto Firmino 45’
Assists: Andrew Robertson 10’, James Milner 45’

Opposition Goal scorer: Rachid Ghezzal 63’
Opposition Assist: James Maddison 63’

Liverpool maintained their winning start to the season but Alisson conceded his first Premier League goal.

Match week 5: Wembley Stadium, Saturday, 15 September 2018
Referee: Michael Oliver
Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 2 Liverpool

Goal scorers: Georginio Wijnaldum 39’, Roberto Firmino 54’

Opposition Goal scorer: Erik Lamela 90 +3’
Opposition Assist: Christian Eriksen 90 +3’

Liverpool went level with Chelsea after this match with both sides finishing the match week on 15 points.

Match week 6: Anfield, Saturday, 22 September 2018
Referee: Paul Tierney
Liverpool 3 – 0 Southampton

Goal scorers: Wesley Hoedt 10’ (Own Goal), Joel Matip 21’, Mohamed Salah 45 +3’
Assists: Trent Alexander-Arnold 21’

Xherdan Shaqiri celebrated his first Premier League start for the Reds and was key in two of the three goals scored.

Match week 7: Stamford Bridge, Saturday, 29 September 2018
Referee: Andre Marriner
Chelsea 1 – 1 Liverpool

Goal scorers: Daniel Sturridge 89’
Assists: Xherdan Shaqiri 89’

Opposition Goal scorer: Eden Hazard 25’
Opposition Assist: Matteo Kovacic

Daniel Sturridge scored three minutes after coming on as a substitute and saved the day with Liverpool succumbing to their first draw of the season which saw them dropping to second place on the table on 19 points, behind Manchester City.

Match week 8: Anfield, Sunday, 7 October 2018
Referee: Martin Atkinson
Liverpool 0 – 0 Manchester City

Manchester City continued their 15-year winless streak at Anfield with both sides remaining unbeaten in the PL along with Chelsea.

Match week 9: John Smith Stadium, Saturday, 20 October 2018
Referee: Michael Oliver
Huddersfield 0 – 1 Liverpool

Goal scorers: Mohamed Salah 24’
Assists: Xherdan Shaqiri 24’

The win at Huddersfield saw the Reds move into second place on goal difference with both City and Liverpool holding firm on 23 points.

Match week 10: Anfield, Saturday, 27 October 2018
Referee: Stuart Atwell
Liverpool 4 – 1 Cardiff

Goal scorers: Mohamed Salah 10’, Sadio Mané 66’ & 87’, Xherdan Shaqiri 84’
Assists: Mohamed Salah 84’ & 87’

Opposition Goal scorer: Callum Paterson 77’

Callum Paterson’s goal saw Liverpool concede their first Premier League home goal of the season.
