Nathaniel Clyne Reportedly Heading to Bournemouth on Loan

The long-injured Liverpool right back is expected to leave on loan to Bournemouth this month in search of regular playing time.

A player of Nathaniel Clyne’s quality needs to be performing regularly in order to break into the high-calibre ranks at Liverpool. The England right-back has been out of consistent action for around 18 months and, despite Jürgen Klopp not having a true right-sided fullback to spell Trent Alexander-Arnold, it looks like Clyne will be loaned out this transfer window in search of regular minutes.

Both Cardiff City and Leicester City have been bandied about as temporary destinations for Clyne but Sky Sports has reported today that Bournemouth have risen up through the negotiation dust cloud and agreed terms with Liverpool for the player.

No deal has officially been announced by Liverpool but that would be expected to follow soon. His ultimate importance to Klopp’s plan is unknown but Clyne is a solid fullback who requires game time and match fitness if he is ever going to reach his pre-injury level of football.

With Joe Gomez still out it’s not clear who Klopp’s main back-up to Alexander-Arnold would be. Shoving either James Milner or Fabinho into the position should be seen as one-off solutions, in case of emergency.

Going a half season, including Champions League knock-out rounds, without a sure-thing deputy at right back is worrying. That’s exactly what Klopp was dealing with last season when Gomez was injured and Trent had to do it all but it certainly wasn’t ideal and it’s odd to willingly repeat the scenario, especially with the centre-back injuries Liverpool already have to do deal with.

But good for Clyney?
