Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Takes First Training Session with Teammates
The midfielder may not be due back until at least April, but he took a significant step forward today.
Liverpool look likely to be without Dejan Lovren for next week’s Champions League tie with Bayern Munich, but it’s not all bad news for the Reds at the end of the first day of their warm weather training camp in Marbella.
The good news is that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had his first training session with the rest of the team today after spending the last few weeks working on his own, and the midfielder was thrilled to be back in the action.
“It’s good, good to be back,” he said. “It gives you a good little boost to be in around the lads. You don’t really think about your knee, you’re just happy to be back out there and get on with it. I did a little bit today.”
The 25-year-old didn’t take part in all of the sessions, but he was involved in the passing and rondo drills. Rhian Brewster, Ben Woodburn, and Nat Phillips—all of whom have also dealt with injury issues—also took part.
“The boys had a bit of core work, passing and rondos,” Jürgen Klopp said. “These things Ox can do, Rhian can do, and Ben can do and Nat Phillips could do most of them. Hopefully we can integrate them step by step.”
However, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum, and Fabinho all sat out training today due to minor issues—though Klopp insisted that none of them are significant, and all will be expected to be involved in the coming days.
“Millie and Gini still struggle with illnesses, so they did a bit of work in the hotel,” he added. “Fabinho it will not be a problem, but there was no reason for him to [train] today. None of them are serious, all will be fine.”
